Streams of Consciousness

Streams of Consciousness was a project that came out of Dan Shiffman's Nature of Code class at ITP and was showcased at the ITP Spring Show in 2013. It's a sandbox for the 21st century.

  • The project utilizes:
    • Processing
    • Kinect
    • Mini Projector
    • MadMapper (projection mapping software)
    • 50 pounds of fine white play sand

By digging into the sand, a body of water is exposed. By piling up sand into mounds, islands of grass emerge. Additionally, a collection of floating water droplets move towards the lowest, darkest point detected by the depth image of the Kinect.

Streams of Consciousness brings the user back to the childhood days of playing in a sandbox. The user is the chief architect of their world, building and breaking down form with only her hands.
